After 3 flights and 20 hours we arrived in Palermo, Sicily. Our hotel is a converted 18th century palace in the center of the city. After check in we embarked on a walking tour of our area of Palermo. Palermo appears not crowded and maybe it’s because people have left for the Holy Week. Even though we felt somewhat like zombies, we did a lot of walking. We walked by Teatro Maissomo, a neoclassical opera house, on the way to Piazza Bellini where we wanted to see the 12th century Martorana church. Disappointingly, the church was closed for renovation. And so were several other churches in the old town. Palermo must have gotten substantial EU subsidy for church renovations. We also walked through the Vucciria district and its famous market, which used to be a den of mafia activity. We had a piece of pizza in Caffe Spinnato, which also had amazing sweets, including Easter marzipan candy, which we have to try tomorrow. It was interesting that they cut the pizza into many small pieces before serving it to us. After this four-hour walk, we were so exhausted that we got a bottle of wonderful Sicilian wine and consumed it in our historical room before going out to dinner.
